Wife former NFL linebacker Chris Draft dies one month after wedding

Lakeasha Monique Rutledge Draft, the wife of former NFL linebacker Chris Draft, died Tuesday of lung cancer, exactly one month after the couple's wedding. She was 38.

The Drafts were married Nov. 27 in Atlanta; a terminally ill Lakeasha used a wheelchair to proceed down the aisle, then walked briefly to join Chris before the two exchanged vows.

Chris Draft offered a stirring tribute to his late wife in a post on his foundation's website.

"She courageously faced lung cancer, showing us all with every breath that we all need to hold onto life and love with both hands for as long as we can. Not just an inspiration, but a light, and a force that led the way with a beautiful, sweet smile and bright shining eyes that both belied the pure steel of her strength and determination," Draft wrote.

"Strong is too pale, too shallow and too small of a word to describe Keasha?s vibrancy ... Quite simply, she was ferocious. She fiercely held onto life, and love with a forcefulness that was absolutely awe-inspiring and completely breathtaking. Rest in peace, Mrs. Draft."

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday in Williamston, S.C.

Chris Draft played for the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, St. Louis Rams and Buffalo Bills during a 12-year NFL career from 1998 to 2009.

He also wrote a weekly column for Sporting News during the 2007 season while playing for the Rams.

Will solar energy shine in 2012?

A Bloomberg article recently discussed the decline in the price of photovoltaic panels in 2011. The article discusses the fact that ?The spot price of solar panels has fallen 47 percent this year, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, while crude oil prices have gained 8 percent in New York.?

?

You may think this means there may be a significant burst in solar installation in 2012, but these lower costs may not be sustainable though, since the actual costs involved in the production of solar cells have not declined and is more of a side effect of overproduction. The costs of installing solar cells has declined significantly as better techniques are being used today. The DIY market is responding to the reduction is solar panel costs as well.

?

It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Obama may lose gay voters to Gary Johnson in 2012 (Daily Caller)

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson announced Wednesday that he will run for president as a Libertarian Party candidate in 2012. He will almost certainly be the only presidential candidate on the ballot in all 50 states supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Johnson?s support for same-sex marriage, and President Barack Obama?s opposition to it, could put the support and votes of gay Americans in play during the election.

Lt. Dan Choi, who was discharged from the military under the ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell? policy, told The Daily Caller, ?I am not in the habit of endorsing candidates and I no longer belong to any party, but I hold Governor Johnson in highest regards and think he would be an amazing president.?

Choi, who has declared in the past that he won?t vote for Obama again, ?called Johnson ?a patriot, a hero, a fighter and a friend. I salute him proudly and wish him the very best in his campaign.?

GOProud executive director Jimmy LaSalvia similarly indicated that gay voters may consider voting for Johnson.

?Gov. Johnson may very well attract gay voters because of his position on same-sex civil marriage, but I think that everyone on the ballot in November is going to give Obama a run for his money,? said LaSalvia.

Republican presidential candidate Fred Karger, currently running as the first openly gay man seeking a major party?s nomination, said that he is sticking with the GOP, but does find Johnson appealing as a candidate.

?I am a huge Gary Johnson fan and consider him a friend, but I am staying in the Republican Party and will fight for change from within,? said Karger.

Johnson is himself aware of that his position on same-sex marriage may pull votes away from the major party candidates, particularly from President Obama.

?I?m the only one advocating for marriage equality,? Johnson told The Daily Caller. ?If I were gay, that would really be an important issue for me.?

Johnson added, ?What I?m being asked right now is, ?Aren?t you going to ensure Obama?s re-election???

?I may well take more votes from Obama because of gay rights,? he conceded, but also ?because of the war, because of the war on drugs, you can really go down the list.?

The Human Rights Campaign, a large gay rights organization based in Washington, D.C., has already?endorsed Obama?s re-election bid. The group?s offices are closed for the holidays, so it was unable to comment on whether the endorsement will be reconsidered.

Choi said HRC members??should reconsider their purpose vis a vis the gay movement. If we are to play second fiddle to any one political party, our rights will always be relegated to the back of the DNC bus,? he said.

?It?s one thing to talk about the issues, and it?s another thing to look at the resume and decide: Is he going to hang with what he says?? Johnson mused. ?And everything about my resume says I?m going to hang with what I?m saying.?

Crocodile Tries To Eat Lawn Mower

A hungry saltwater crocodile named Elvis was apparently pretty hungry today.

He also showed an apparent affinity for household machinery when he charged at a worker at an Australian reptile park before trying to eat ... his lawn mower.

"Before we knew it, the crocodile had the mower above his head," Tim Faulkner said. "He got his jaws around the top and picked it up and took it underwater."

The reptile workers quickly left Elvis alone to enjoy his newly acquired mower, which he sat by until he was bribed with some Kangaroo meat to relinquish it.

Here's some footage of the croc's delicious meal:

First lady helps track Santa for NORAD

First lady Michelle Obama got into the Christmas spirit Saturday by helping NORAD to track Santa Claus ? and the defense agency needed the help, with a record number of calls from anxious children.

Volunteers at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado had fielded more than 80,000 calls Saturday evening, breaking the previous record. Also, Santa's NORAD Facebook page approached 980,000 "likes." Last year, Santa had 716,000 "likes."

NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, has been telling children about Santa's whereabouts every year since 1955. That was the year a Colorado Springs newspaper ad invited kids to call Santa on a hotline, but the number had a typo, and dozens of kids wound up talking to the Continental Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor.

Story: Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa headed back to North Pole
  1. Other political news of note

    1. GOP: Gingrich, Perry fail to qualify for Va. primary

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry have failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary.

    2. Payroll tax cut OK'd by Congress, signed by Obama

    4. First lady helps track Santa for NORAD
    5. Trump breaks with GOP, eyes independent bid

The officers on duty played along and began sharing reports on Santa's progress. It's now a deep-rooted tradition at NORAD, a joint U.S.-Canada command that monitors the North American skies and seas from a control center at Peterson.

Santa's first stop in the U.S. came at 9:02 p.m. MST in Atlanta, said Canadian Navy Lt. Al Blondin.

Mrs. Obama answered several calls in Kailua, Hawaii, from children who wanted to know how close Santa was to their homes.

A White House transcript contained details of several calls.

Mrs. Obama told a girl named Summer that Santa was over Finland.

"And I can see a glowing light, and it looks like, from the satellite, that he's got all nine reindeer with him, and it looks like his sleigh is pretty full," she told Summer. "It looks like a full sleigh of toys. So I hope you've been good this year. Summer, have you been?"

Summer responded that she was good, and that she wanted a Clawdeen Monster High Doll with a pair of shoes.

The first lady told Summer that Santa "only comes to your house after he knows you're asleep. So no matter where he is in the world, you've got to be asleep."

Kaelyn Brayden asked the first lady "how many fireplaces do you guys have in the White House?"

Mrs. Obama didn't have an exact count.

"There's almost a fireplace in every single room, and there are dozens and dozens of rooms," she told the caller. However, she said, Santa usually comes down the White House's Yellow Oval Room fireplace.

"Yeah, that's where we put our Santa tree," the first lady explained. "And he usually comes down that one, and that's where Malia and Sasha get their gifts."

The first family is spending the holidays in Hawaii and otherwise spent a low-key Christmas Eve out of the spotlight.

President Barack Obama spent his first morning in Hawaii at the multimillion-dollar vacation home his family rents in the Kailua Beach area, near Honolulu. He skipped his standard early morning gym workout and headed to the golf course later Saturday.

The Obamas were to spend Christmas Eve at home with a close circle of family and friends that typically joins the president for his annual Hawaiian vacation. They include Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives in the state with her family, and several friends the president has known since high school.

The president's annual December trip to the state where he was born and mostly raised almost didn't happen. He had planned to arrive in Hawaii on Dec. 17, but delayed his departure while Congress worked its way through a stalemate over extending payroll tax cuts.

A deal was finalized Friday morning. Hours later, the president boarded Air Force One for Hawaii to meet his wife and daughters, who traveled ahead of him.

Obama's first order of business when he arrived was taking his wife out to dinner. The couple joined a few friends at Morimoto restaurant, one of their favorite dining spots on the island of Oahu.

The president has no public events planned in Hawaii. A small group of advisers accompanied him to brief him on domestic and international developments.

The Obamas are expected to return to Washington shortly after New Year's Day.

UPDATE 1-Softbank to quit on Myspace in Japan-Nikkei

Thu Dec 22, 2011 3:10pm EST

Dec 23 (Reuters) - Softbank Corp will quit its domestic social networking site business after just five years, liquidating a joint venture with Rupert Murdoch's News Corp for the Japanese-language version of Myspace, the Nikkei business daily reported.

The 50-50 joint venture with U.S. media group News Corp will shut down at the end of January and be liquidated, the Nikkei reported. The Japanese-language service will be taken over by U.S. firm Myspace LLC, the newspaper added.

News Corp acquired Myspace for $580 million in 2005, when it was among the world's most popular websites, and the company's success in beating out rival Viacom Inc in a bidding war was viewed as a major victory for Murdoch.

However, since then Facebook eclipsed Myspace in popularity and in June, News Corp sold the website to advertising company Specific Media LLC and singer Justin Timberlake at a fraction of what it had paid.

News Corp continues to own its stake in the Japanese unit, the Nikkei said.

Launched in Nov. 2006, Myspace's Japanese service tied up with record labels and sought to tout itself as a way for artists to reach fans. But it failed to offer attractive content, and had only signed up about 1.08 million users as of August, not even a 10th of Facebook's tally, the paper said.

'X Factor' Finale Features Guest Duets

R. Kelly, Avril Lavigne and Alanis Morissette join contestants on their final night of performances.

At the outset of Wednesday's (December 21) 90-minute "The X Factor" performance finale, which pitted three singers — Josh Krajcik, Chris Rene and Melanie Amaro — against one another for a $5 million recording contract, judge Simon Cowell predicted, "I think this is going to be the closest final we've ever had."

By the end of the penultimate show, Cowell made it clear who had his vote to win, and unsurprisingly, it was the singer he mentored in the race, Melanie Amaro. Following Amaro's second song, a rendition of Beyoncé's "Dreamgirls" ballad "Listen," Cowell gave up all pretense of objectivity and threw his weight behind the singer, whom he at one point cut from the competition before reconsidering and allowing her back in after making a personal visit to her home.

"I brought this show to America because I believe some of the greatest singers in the world are from this country, and you just proved that," he told the 19-year-old from Sunrise, Florida. "I think you, based on that performance tonight, to me, should be the winner of 'The X Factor,' because you're going to represent this country all over the world."

Earlier in the show, Amaro performed a duet of "I Believe I Can Fly" with R. Kelly, which marked Kelly's first performance since undergoing throat surgery earlier this year. Amaro held her own with the singer, but Kells stole the spotlight with his effortless vocal gymnastics, on what was called his first-ever duet of his 1996 smash. For his part, Kells called Amaro "unbelievable," and said, "There's no doubt in my mind this girl is on her way to the moon." While L.A. Reid criticized Amaro for not performing well in the song's key, Cowell backed her 100 percent, calling the performance "close to godly."

Chris Rene, a 28-year-old from Santa Cruz, California, shared the stage early on with Avril Lavigne, as the two performed Lavigne's hit "Complicated" together, complete with a new rap from Rene. Rene's second song was "Young Homie," a song he penned and sang during the audition process and again on the November 22 episode, when he mixed it with the Beatles' "Let It Be."

He earned high marks from the judges, with Paula Abdul dubbing his "Young Homie" performance "magic," while calling Rene — who celebrated his eighth month of sobriety on Tuesday — the "consummate singer-songwriter-performer." "You make everyone fall in love with you!" she beamed. Cowell called him a "brilliant" performer, adding he's a "true gentleman" and a "really nice guy."

Josh Krajcik, a 30-year-old self-described "burrito slinger" from Columbus, Ohio, opened the show with Alanis Morissette, as the two took on her 1998 hit "Uninvited." Krajcik was visibly nervous while sharing the stage with Morissette but was much more in his element during his second song, when he stripped away all the fancy production cues and did "At Last" alone with his guitar. That performance was hailed as a return to form from the judges.

"This is what we liked about you in the first place," said Cowell, while Krajcik's mentor, Nicole Scherzinger, praised his consistency throughout the competition. "You have delivered in every single performance," she told him.

The winner will be crowned on Thursday's two-hour finale, which is set to feature appearances by Justin Bieber, 50 Cent, Leona Lewis, Pitbull and Ne-Yo.

India: cellphones generate radiation, send a text message instead

Is your cellphone bad for your health? India's government seems to think so, because it's planning a law that will require all phones to display how much electro-magnetic radiation they generate. Radiation is measured in SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) and the Indian limit has been lowered to match the USA's 1.6W/kg, whereas before it followed the European ceiling of 2W/kg. But even handsets that meet this criterion may have to declare their SAR level, and also carry a message asking people to keep their calls or short or use SMS instead -- implying that the Indian government regards radiation as dangerous at any level.

[Thanks, Yogesh]

Burglars steal presents, wedding ring, computers from Capitol Hill home

SEATTLE -- The burglars came through a window the family thought was too small for anyone to fit.

"The first thing I remembered is I had my wedding ring on the bedside and that was gone," said Dawn Matisse.

Matisse regrets not having a photo of her ring or enough insurance to cover all their stolen jewelry. And her school work from her PhD program is gone.

"We had four laptops, one of which was brand new. Everything underneath the tree, which is probably the biggest heartbreak. All of Sarah's presents."

Sarah is their 7-year-old daughter.

"I know everyone has heard this," says Will Damon, Matisse's husband. "It's the sense of violation. People that I don't know were in my house doing this."

But little by little, things are getting better.

"People have been so kind to us, so kind," says Matisse.

Strangers are reaching out to them, and the couple just learned of a card-writing campaign a friend started for them on the CHS Capitol Hill Seattle Blog.

"It's very sweet," says Matisse with tears in her eyes. "It's wonderful."

"This really was a bummer, and this happened and it stinks," says Damon. "But it's not what you do, it's what you do next.

Damon and Matisse advise homeowners to make sure their insurance policies are up to date, and to have photos of your valuables. They also remind others to keep back ups of their computers outside the home.

Holiday flying to fall slightly, trade group says

(AP) ? Fewer people will fly this holiday season, but flights will still be packed.

That's according to a forecast released Tuesday by the main trade group representing U.S. airlines. Airlines for America predicts that about 43.3 million travelers will fly on U.S. carriers over the three-week holiday period, a 1 percent decline from a year earlier. That works out to about 20,000 fewer people per day. The trade group attributes the decline to "lingering economic concerns" and high energy prices that are limiting would-be travelers' disposable income.

About 1.6 million to 2.3 million people are forecast to fly each day between Wednesday and the first week of January.

Even with fewer passengers, fliers won't have more room to stretch out. Flights will be full because airlines have reduced the number of flights and planes, the trade group said.

Packed planes don't just mean less leg room, though. Fuller planes also mean more delays if something goes wrong. Last year, when major snowstorms shut airports and crippled airlines, millions of travelers waited days to find other travel options.

A4A didn't offer a specific forecast for what passengers are paying to fly. But its chief economist, John Heimlich, expects fares in December will be on par with the rest of 2011, or about 10 percent higher than a year ago.

Even with higher fares, A4A notes that airlines are holding on to less than a penny in profit for every dollar in revenue. That's because operating expenses, mostly due to higher fuel prices, are climbing just as fast as sales.

Travelers bracing for packed planes and long lines should keep these tips in mind to make travel run smoothly:

AT HOME

? Check in a full 24 hours ahead of your flight. This will help in getting the seat you want and possibly give you a leg up later on. Some airlines board fliers according to check-in times.

? Don't forget your bags. When you check in online, make sure you indicate if you have a checked bag. Checking in luggage online will save time at the airport.

? Arm yourself with information. Look up the airline's customer service number and its contract of carriage ? the list of rights you have on a flight ? on the airline's website before you leave home. It'll pay off if something goes wrong.

? Brings snacks and an empty water bottle. You can fill the water bottle after you go through security.

? Don't wrap gifts. The TSA will unwrap anything they deem suspicious. Don't risk it.

? Pack sensibly. The holidays might not be the best time to stuff a carry-on to avoid a checked bag fee. Overhead bins will be extremely full.

AT THE AIRPORT

? Arrive early. It's the easiest way to de-stress your trip.

? Plot your attack. There are smartphone applications that let you check everything from the emptiest parking lots to security wait times. You can also sign up for flight alerts though the airlines or online travel sites that will let you know if you know if your flight is delayed or canceled.

? Wear slip-on shoes. They're the easiest to get on and off at security. This year, though, kids under 12 won't have to remove their shoes.

? Think like a seasoned traveler. Have your liquids in a plastic bag outside of your suitcase before approaching security. Take off your belt, and remove everything from your pockets (new body scanners are more sensitive to those items than metal detectors.) Also, have your boarding pass and identification in your hand to speed things up.

Teens choose water when calorie count of sugary beverages is easier to understand

Teens choose water when calorie count of sugary beverages is easier to understand

Friday, December 16, 2011

Thirsty? You may be more inclined to reach for plain old H2O if you knew how many calories are in sugar-sweetened beverages; this is according to a new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. They examined the effect of providing clear and visible caloric information about sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda and fruit juice on the number of sugar-sweetened beverage purchases at neighborhood stores, and found that providing easily understandable caloric information, specifically in the form of a physical activity equivalent, may reduce the likelihood of sugar-sweetened beverage purchases among adolescents by as much as half. The results are featured in a recent issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

"People generally underestimate the number of calories in the foods and beverages they consume," said Sara Bleich, PhD, assistant professor with the Bloomberg School's Department of Health Policy and Management. "Providing easily understandable caloric information?particularly in the form of a physical activity equivalent, such as running?may reduce calorie intake from sugar-sweetened beverages and increase water consumption among low-income black adolescents."

Researchers conducted the study at four corner stores located in low-income, predominately black neighborhoods in Baltimore, Md. For the intervention, one of three caloric information signs were randomly posted with the following information: "Did you know that a bottle of soda or fruit juice has about 250 calories?" (absolute caloric count); "Did you know that a bottle of soda or fruit juice has about 10 percent of your daily calories?" (percentage of total recommended daily intake); and "Did you know that working off a bottle of soda or fruit juice takes about 50 minutes of running?" (physical activity equivalent). They collected data for 1,600 beverage sales to black adolescents, aged 12-18 years, including 400 during a baseline period and 400 for each of the 3 caloric-condition interventions. Researchers found that providing participants with any caloric information significantly reduced the odds of sugar-sweetened beverage purchases by 40 percent relative to the baseline of no information. Of the three caloric-condition interventions, the physical activity equivalent was most effective, reducing the odds of black adolescents purchasing a sugar-sweetened beverage by 50 percent.

Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda, sport drinks, energy drinks and fruit drinks has been associated with obesity and is highest among minority and lower income adolescents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one third of U.S. adults and 17 percent of U.S children are obese. Obesity increases the risk of many adverse health conditions including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure.

"Because of the inclusion of mandatory calorie labeling in the recent health reform bill, it is critical to explore the most effective strategies for presenting caloric information to consumers on fast food restaurant menu boards," suggest the study's authors.

Adobe Flash Player, Netflix streaming apps updated for Ice Cream Sandwich

Now that Ice Cream Sandwich is rolling out officially in the US on Verizon, it appears at least a few developers have seen the need to roll out Android 4.0-friendly versions of their software. Just as promised a (final?) version of Flash Player of Android has hit the market specifically to make sure ICS devices can get the "full" web. Meanwhile, in a less melancholy update, Netflix also updated its Watch Instantly app to work on Android 4.0, something we're sure on-the-go movie watchers will appreciate. If you've been lucky enough to get your hands on a Galaxy Nexus LTE, let us know if you're seeing any other apps that either have received or need to get an update to keep things working smoothly.

Many Toddlers Wind Up in ER After Accidental Overdose (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Dec. 13 (HealthDay News) -- Each year in the United States, one of every 150 two-year-olds visits an emergency room for treatment of an accidental medication overdose, a new government report shows.

Most of these cases occur when unsupervised children eat or drink medicines they find at home, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A new program to educate parents and caregivers about safe medication storage and what to do in an emergency was announced this week by the CDC and a coalition of partners. The "Up and Away and Out of Sight" program outlines measures parents can take to protect children.

"Parents may not be aware of the danger posed by leaving medications where young children can reach them. In recent years, the number of accidental overdoses in young children has increased by 20 percent," Dr. Dan Budnitz, director of CDC's Medication Safety Program, said in a CDC news release. "A few simple steps -- done every time -- can protect our children."

Any vitamin or medicine, even those you buy without a prescription, can cause harm if taken improperly, the CDC warned.

All medicines and vitamins should be stored in a place that's too high for children to reach or see. Always put medicines away after you use them. Never leave them out on a kitchen counter or a sick child's bedside, even if you have to give the medicine again in a few hours.

Make sure safety caps are locked after you use medicines. If it's a locking cap that turns, twist it until you hear a click.

Teach children about medicine safety. Never tell children that medicine is candy to get them to take it, the CDC stressed.

Ask visitors and houseguests to keep purses, bags or coats that have medicines in them up and away and out of sight when they are in your home.

Be prepared for emergencies. Program the poison control number (1-800-222-1222) into home and cellphones.

"Even with improvements to packaging, no medication package can be 100 percent childproof," Dr. Richard Dart, president of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, said in the news release. "Poison centers receive calls every day about young children getting into medicines without adult supervision; that's why we encourage all parents and caregivers to follow these simple steps to ensure their child's safety."

With Watch It Button, Plexus Creates A ?Super Netflix Queue? For Movies Across The Web

WatchIt_Logo_LargeDespite its struggles of late, Netflix is still one of the most popular sources when it comes to online streaming of movies and TV shows. (Although things may change if it's acquired by Verizon.) For many of us, the Netflix queue is our go-to source for bookmarking films that we'd like to watch at a later date. One new startup, called Plexus Entertainment, wants to take the Netflix formula and apply it to a broader scale. In the big picture, Plexus' goal is to connect films and filmmakers with their audiences, so to do that, they've launched "Watch It" in public beta to allow users to keep track of movies they're interested in, where those movies are playing, and to be proactively notified of all the different ways to view those films. Huzzah!

Verizon reportedly blocking access to Google Wallet on its Galaxy Nexus

Galaxy Nexus NFC

Pop quiz: List, in alphabetical order, all of the Google Nexus phones that officially have access to Google Wallet.

If you aswered the Sprint Nexus S 4G -- and only the Sprint Nexus S 4G -- you're exactly right. And it looks like it might stay that way for the time being. 9 to 5 Google, citing an unnamed source, reports that the Verizon Galaxy Nexus won't have access to Google Wallet, despite that sweet NFC chip tucked into the phone's battery.

And the kicker: Verizon is said to be the one keeping Google Wallet off its Galaxy Nexus. (Never mind that it's a Nexus phone, and remember that we're expecting a couple of Verizon-specific appliations preloaded. We called it Verizon's Nexus for a reason.) And the reason for no Google Wallet on the Galaxy Nexus, according to the anonymous source, is that it's a direct competitor to ISIS, another NFC standard backed by Verizon, along with manufacturers LG, HTC, Motorola, RIM, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Oh, and guess who else backs ISIS: AT&T and T-Mobile -- two U.S. carriers that have network-specific versions of the Samsung Nexus S in the United States, which, despite also having NFC capabilities, have no official build of Google Wallet. (Like with the Galaxy Nexus, you can hack Google Wallet on just fine, thank you very much.) Maybe that's just our tinfoil hat talking, but you can't deny that Google Wallet's only officially available on a single phone.
