Dearborn Divine Child Wrestler Places 5th in State - Dearborn, MI ...

AUBURN HILLS ? Divine Child wrestler Jamie Jakes placed fifth on Saturday in the MHSAA individual wrestling tournament at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Jakes won his first match at the 152-pound weight class at Division 2, then lost in the quarterfinals on Friday, which sent him into the consolation bracket. He had two victories in the consolation bracket before falling to Shawn Brewer of New Boston-Huron.

On Friday, Jakes, a senior, lost the quarterfinals bout on a 2-1 decision to Mason senior Nick Starzec.

Starzec scored a takedown with only seven seconds left in the second round and that was enough to get him to the semifinals.

"He didn't get the points and I think it was an issue of control," said Falcons coach Tyler Elkins, who said Jakes has a habit of wrestling really close matches. In the opening round, Jakes won a 5-4 decision.

"He usually is good in those clutch situations," Elkins said. "It makes it real tough on his coaches that's for sure."

Jakes beat Christian Shelby of Tecumseh later in the day on Friday.

Dearborn senior Arfan Khathem lasted three rounds before being eliminated at The Palace at the 145-pound class in Division 1.

Khathem lost his first-round match on a 7-0 decision to Portage Central's Dominic Latora (145 pounds). Latora maintained control for much of the match and looked like the stronger of the two competitors.

Khathem had to take an extended injury timeout in the third round because of his left arm. He finished the match, but didn't get close to scoring a takedown.

Khathem won his second-round match against Oxford's Wes Maskill, but then lost in the third match, on Friday, to Ed Nuttall of Ypsilanti-Lincoln.
