ERS blog ? Cloud Computing Standards

Necessity is the mother of invention ? Plato

Gartner?s ?Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies 2012? predicts that cloud computing will reach a plateau of productivity in 2-5 years? time. The key enabling technologies for this are fast wide area networks, powerful expensive server computers and high performance virtualization for commodity hardware. However, a lack of standardization to guide development, deployment and integration efforts around technical challenges like interoperability, portability and reusability,? and business concerns like security/compliance, regulation/jurisdiction and vendor lock-in? are cited as major barriers for wider adoption and success.

NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) cloud computing standards roadmap report published in 2011 well documents the fact that broad standards are already available in support of certain functions and requirements for cloud computing. While most of these standards were developed in support of pre-cloud computing technologies, such as those designed for web services and the Internet, they also support the functions and requirements of cloud computing. Other standards are now being developed in specific support of cloud computing functions and requirements, such as virtualization.

The NIST report further goes to state that from a standardization point, the cloud interfaces presented to cloud users can be broken down into two major categories, with interoperability determined separately for each category.

The interface that is presented to (or by) the contents of the cloud encompasses the primary function of the cloud service. This is distinct from the interface that is used to manage the use of the cloud service.

Now, if we have to understand this in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud offering parlance, the NIST report elucidates that the functional interface is a virtualized Central Processing Unit (CPU), memory and input/output (I/O) space typically used by an operating system (and the stack of software running in that operating system [OS] instance).

The cloud user utilizes the management interface to control their use of the cloud service by starting, stopping, and manipulating virtual machine images and associated resources. It should be clear from this that the functional interface for an IaaS cloud is very much tied to the architecture of the CPU being virtualized. This is not a cloud-specific interface, and no effort is being put into a de jure standard for this interface since de facto CPU architectures are the norm.

The self-service IaaS management interface, however, is a candidate for interoperability standardization.

From a functional viewpoint Platform as a Service, PaaS is a set of libraries and components to which the application is written mostly to take advantage of existing application platforms standards such as those found in J2EE or DOTNET.

SaaS application leverages the standards designed for web services and the internet.

Apart from interoperability, there is a lot of focus on cloud portability as the means to prevent being locked into any particular cloud or service provider. Portability is generally the ability to move applications and data from one computing environment to another. Standards are fundamental to achieve portability.

Security ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information and information systems forms the 3rd aspect where a standardized approach is warranted to alleviate the high priority concerns and perceived risks related to cloud computing.

Forrester predicts IaaS will become more standardized by 2015, which is somewhat in line with Gartner?s hype cycle prediction. There?s a lot of effort taking place which is worth looking at.

DMTF?s (Distributed Management Task Force, Inc.) Virtualization Management (VMAN) Virtualization Profiles have achieved ANSI adoption. As DTMF defines it, the VMAN standard is comprised of two components: the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) specification, which provides a standard format for packaging and describing virtual machines and applications for deployment across virtualization platforms, and the Virtualization Profiles, which standardize many aspects of the operational management of a virtualized environment. Together, these components deliver broadly supported interoperability and portability standards to virtual computing environments for deploying pre-configured solutions across heterogeneous computing networks.4

Next in line from the DMTF stable is CIMI (Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface). Version one has been released, and the specification standardizes interactions between cloud environments to achieve interoperable cloud infrastructure management between service providers and their consumers and developers. CIMI is developed as a self-service interface for infrastructure clouds which allows users to dynamically provision configure and administer their cloud usage.4

Coming to Data portability, SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association) is behind CDMI which defines the functional interface that applications will use to create, retrieve, update and delete data elements from the cloud. As part of this interface the client will be able to discover the capabilities of the cloud storage offering and use this interface to manage containers and the data that is placed in them. In addition, metadata can be set on containers and their contained data elements through this interface.5

Service-Oriented Cloud Computing Infrastructure Framework (SOCCI), made available by the Open Group, is for enterprises that wish to provide infrastructure as a service in the cloud and SOA. It outlines the concepts and architectural building blocks necessary for infrastructures to support SOA and cloud initiatives.

On the open source side, OpenStack, the initiative with the largest vendor community, is creating a lot of de facto standards for operating systems that will be deployed on the cloud.

Open Cloud Computing Interface (OCCI) published by Open Grid Forum, is a RESTful boundary protocol and API that acts as a service front-end to a provider?s internal management framework. OCCI describes APIs that enable cloud providers to expose their services. It allows the deployment, monitoring and management of virtual workloads (like virtual machines), but is applicable to any interaction with a virtual cloud resource through defined http(s) header fields and extensions. 6 OCCI endpoints can function either as service providers or service consumers, or both. Further, the OCCI working group and the OpenStack team are working together to deliver an OCCI implementation in OpenStack.

The nonspecific web and internet technology standards enabling the cloud are TCP/IP, HTTP, HTML, SSL, TLS XML, JSON, DNS, etc.

Another point worth mentioning here is SDN (Software Defined Networking), and understanding how it shall impact cloud computing. The SDN approach makes virtual networking with elastic resource allocation which is an engineering realization of network reaction to application requirement.

SDN separates the control plane from the data plane in network switches and routers. Under SDN, the control plane is implemented in software in servers separate from the network equipment, and the data plane is implemented in commodity network equipment. The Open Networking Foundation has specified the OpenFlow protocol standard as an implementation of SDN.

Now , what we get combining all these is shared pool of configurable computing resources, e.g., networks, servers and storage, that can be rapidly provisioned , orchestrated and released in a standardized way.

The industry is already warming up to this prospect, which is evident from the early steps taken in this direction. Notable is CISCO?s ONE (Open Network Environment) that brings together CISCO, OpenStack and OpenFlow.

A few questions still remain to be answered. How do industry behemoths VMware and Microsoft plan to integrate standardization in their next product plan? What role could TSPs/carriers play in shaping standardization for cloud computing?

Samsung aims to become key player in digital content distribution through company buyouts

The writing has been on the wall ever since Samsung's acquisition of mSpot, but the Korean firm today confirmed to Reuters that it plans to join the ranks of Apple, Google and Amazon in the world of digital content distribution. Most importantly, it plans to do so through buyouts. Samsung executive Kang Tae-jin offered a rather frank overview of the company's ambitions, saying that it will grow Music Hub into one of the top four services in terms of revenue and subscribers within the next three years. According to Kang, the push isn't so much to tap a new source of revenue, but rather to drive hardware sales -- perhaps it sees Apple's rumored move into music streaming as a bit of a threat. That said, the announcement also dovetails with rumblings of Samsung's efforts to build a more self-sufficient software ecosystem. Whatever the true reason, we'd imagine that the folks at Pandora, Spotify and the like are now watching the phone a bit more intently. Wouldn't you?

Butt-Injection Death Highlights Underground Plastic Surgery

surgeryIllegal plastic surgery made headlines again this week when Morris ?Tracey Lynn? Garner was charged with depraved-heart murder in Mississippi after he allegedly injected a woman?s buttocks with so much of a silicone-like substance that she later died of complications, including blood clots in her lungs.

The alleged incident horrifies plastic surgeons, but doesn?t surprise them because, they say, underground and barely legal procedures are on the rise.

?You don?t even have words to speak about what a horrible thing it is when somebody who is trying to improve their appearance and self-confidence only ends up, not only potentially unhappy, but dead,? said Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Arlington Heights, Ill. ?We?re hearing more and more about deaths when non-physicians are doing injections, and patients just aren?t informed.?

(HIV/AIDS) is a disease of the human immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The symptoms of HIV and AIDS vary, depending on the phase of infection. The majority of people infected by HIV develop a flu-like illness within a month or two after the virus enters the body. As the virus continues to multiply and destroy immune cells, you may develop mild infections or chronic symptoms HIV is transmitted primarily via unprotected sexual intercourse (including anal and even oral sex), contaminated blood transfusions and hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. Some bodily fluids, such as saliva and tears, do not transmit HIV. Prevention of HIV infection, primarily through safe sex and needle-exchange programs, is a key strategy to control the spread of the disease People are diagnosed with AIDS when they have certain signs or symptoms. Blood tests are the most common way to diagnose the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Macho image fades as Russia's Putin nears 60

MOSCOW - As Vladimir Putin's 60th birthday approaches, a wave of biting satire is starting to hurt his macho image.

Back in the Kremlin since May, the former KGB spy faces the biggest protests of his long rule and ratings that an independent pollster says have slipped below 50 percent. His image, says a former Kremlin spin-doctor, may need rebranding.

Vote-winning antics such as horse-riding bare-chested, or shooting a tiger with a tranquiliser dart now open him to ridicule reminiscent of that directed at Boris Yeltsin, the vodka-swilling leader he replaced 12 years ago.

Putin has long cultivated a sober and vigorous image in contrast with Yeltsin. His spokesman said he was paying little attention to his birthday on October 7 because of his passion for his job.

Many analysts say he will seek another six-year term when his mandate ends in 2018. He has no obvious successor and a strong hold on business in the country of 140 million, a major oil and gas producer.

"Putin is still the guy you have to go to for approval on any major business decision," said a senior Western executive based in Moscow. "He is still the ultimate arbiter."

The satire is focused on the Internet, which has helped remove the shackles on criticism and has proved a growing influence in Russia as a forum where Putin's opponents announce their protests.

At times it portrays Putin as a buffoon, the image that haunted Yeltsin, who once picked up a baton and conducted a band after a champagne lunch in Germany, and on another occasion played the spoons on the head of the president of Kyrgyzstan.

When Putin donned white baggy overalls and goggles to fly in a light aircraft alongside endangered migrating cranes this month, doctored pictures and jokes spread across the Internet and social networking sites in minutes.

The "Flight of hope", intended to show cranes born in captivity how to follow a leader in a flock, was quickly mocked by a blogger who said "we all lost hope long ago".

A video montage on Youtube showed doctored images of Putin with a yellow beak and in flight in a Superman costume. In a nod to a leaked U.S. diplomatic cable calling Putin an Alpha-dog, a cartoon showed him telling other cranes: "I am the Alpha crane."

Putin has laughed off the jokes and hit back, tongue-in-cheek, by describing his opponents as "birds who do not like to fly in a flock and prefer to nest individually".

'Tsar without substance'
Such comments have only spawned more jokes.

"There were always plenty of reasons (to satirize Putin). I even feel a bit sorry for him now because he's not as confident as he was a few years ago," Sergei Yolkin, a cartoonist who has regularly poked fun at the president, said by telephone.

"He's been at a bit of a loss for the past year and you can see it in his public relations efforts."

When he announced a year ago that he planned to return to the presidency for six more years, making it likely he would rule for as long as Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, a picture did the rounds of Putin's face imposed on a portrait of Brezhnev, prematurely aged and decrepit. Brezhnev's rule is associated with stagnation, a fear some Russians have of Putin's new term.

When Putin said last December he mistook the white ribbons worn by protesters for condoms, a doctored photo appeared of Putin with a condom pinned to his chest instead of a medal.

Former Kremlin spin doctor Gleb Pavlovsky said Putin's public relations efforts were clearly now failing and described him as resembling a "tsar without any substance."

"He seriously needs rebranding," Pavlovsky said. "Russians like to joke, and the jokes about Putin have become nasty. Many people have got tired of him."

Putin's supporters still hold him up as the man who saved Russia from collapse after inheriting from Yeltsin a country that was in chaos a decade after the Soviet Union fell apart.

Putin reined in Russia's independent-minded regions including Chechnya, where he launched the second of two wars against separatist rebels, and his tough anti-Western rhetoric helped restore Russians' national pride.

"He still has support among a large part of the population, especially in the provinces," said opinion pollster Lev Gudkov.

'Workaholic'
The impact of the web-based satire is hard to gauge. The Internet World Stats website said there were almost 61.5 million Internet users in Russia in 2011, more than 44 percent of the population, but researcher eMarketer said only 10 percent of users in Russia were over 55.

Putin plays to this audience by showing he leads an active lifestyle and is physically strong. He still practices judo, a sport in which has a black belt, the top level of accomplishment, and he swims and plays ice hockey regularly.

"He doesn't pay all that much attention to his birthday. I don't think he notices it because he's an absolute workaholic," said his spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.

For all the satire, there are plenty of Russians who will want to celebrate Putin's birthday.

Tajik singer Tolibzhon Kurbankhanov has released a song and video called "Happy Birthday Mr President". It appears not to be a parody and is a follow-up to "VVP (Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin) which begins: "Let's sit and remember together those years/ When he wasn't here, we had just fear."

A year ago, a group of young women marked Putin's 59th birthday by recording a video of themselves in little more than their blouses and underwear baking him a birthday cake.

Some of Putin's critics say the satire has not hit home.

"I think Putin has shown over the past two years that he is not really bothered by the jokes," said Alexander Yelin, lyricist of the group Rabfak which has performed at anti-Putin rallies, and writer of the song 'Our madhouse votes for Putin'.

"We don't like what's being done in the country but the illness is there and the medication isn't working."

Although support in the provinces helped Putin win almost two-thirds of the votes in the March presidential election, Gudkov's independent Levada polling group said last month that 48 percent of Russians now had a positive view of him compared to 60 percent in May.

He also faces persistent protests demanding he quit, and his response has been tough. Laws have been toughened on protests, defamation and Internet use, homes of protest organisers have been raided, one has been expelled from parliament and he and another face the threat of jail on charges they deny.

Three young women from the Pussy Riot punk band were jailed in August after belting out a profanity-laced anti-Putin protest near the altar of Moscow's main Russian Orthodox cathedral.

Although Putin crushed the rebellion in Chechnya and set about restoring central Kremlin control over the sprawling country, he faces renewed Islamist insurrection in the area.

He has appealed for calm and religious tolerance and warned that violence could spread and tear Russia apart, messages which resonate with many voters who still mourn the Soviet Union.

His prime minister and protege, Dmitry Medvedev, who sat in the Kremlin for four years as president while Putin became the paramount leader as premier - the constitution barred him from seeking a third straight term - is widely seen as out of favor.

Putin's allies - many of them rich businessmen, colleagues from when he worked as a city adviser in St Petersburg and fellow KGB veterans - have given no hint of transferring their support to anyone else and the opposition remains divided.

"As long as he can hold out promises through social policy, and support state-owned enterprises and increases in pensions - state populism, one might say - Putin will retain his support base," Gudkov said.)

Romney has $50.4 million for fall sprint

WASHINGTON (AP) ? At the end of August, Republican Mitt Romney had about $50.4 million to spend on the final months of the campaign, though reports released Thursday showed he owed $15 million on a loan taken that month.

Romney took out a $20 million loan in late August, in the days before his campaign had access to funds they had raised for the general election because he was not yet the official nominee. The new reports show he paid back $5 million before the end of August.

Romney won't have to release his September fundraising data until next month. Campaign officials have said he paid back an additional $4 million on the loan this month.

The loan helped Romney pay for mailings, staff salaries and TV advertising ? and it helped his finances appear healthier on paper. It boosted his total receipts to $86.6 million from the $66.6 million the campaign otherwise took in. Romney in fact spent almost as much as he raised during the month of August.

The loan boosted his cash-on-hand total from $35.4 million to $50.4 million.

Romney couldn't spend money raised for the general election until becoming his party's nominee in late August. He used general election money as collateral for the loan.

Romney and the Republican Party raised more than $111 million combined. That was less than President Barack Obama and the Democrats, who raised more than $114 million.

Novel microscopy technique could open new windows into protozoan behavior, microbial diseases and fertility

Researchers have developed a new way to observe and track large numbers of rapidly moving objects under a microscope, capturing precise motion paths in three dimensions.

Over the course of the study--reported online Sept. 17, 2012, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences--researchers followed an unprecedented 24,000 rapidly moving cells over wide fields of view and through large sample volumes, recording each cell's path for as long as 20 seconds.

"We can very precisely track the motion of small things, more than a thousand of them at the same time, in parallel," says research lead and National Science Foundation CAREER awardee Aydogan Ozcan, an electrical engineering and bioengineering professor at UCLA. "We were able to achieve sub-micron accuracy over a large volume, allowing us to understand, statistically, how thousands of objects move in different ways."

The latest study is an extension of several years of NSF-supported work by Ozcan and his colleagues to develop lens-free, holographic microscopy techniques with applications for field-based detection of blood-borne diseases and other areas of tele-medicine. Those efforts recently resulted in a Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award and a National Geographic Emerging Explorer Award, among others. Ozcan's research is also supported through an NIH Director's New Innovator Award, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award and an Army Research Office Young Investigator Award from the Department of Defense.

For the recent work, Ozcan and his colleagues--Ting-Wei Su, also of UCLA, and Liang Xue, of both UCLA and Nanjing University of Science and Technology in China--used offset beams of red and blue light to create holographic information that, when processed using sophisticated software, accurately reveal the paths of objects moving under a microscope. The researchers tracked several cohorts of more than 1,500 human male gamete cells over a relatively wide field of view (more than 17 square millimeters) and large sample volume (up to 17 cubic millimeters) over several seconds.

The technique, along with a novel software algorithm that the team developed to process observational data, revealed previously unknown statistical pathways for the cells. The researchers found that human male gamete cells travel in a series of twists and turns along a constantly changing path that occasionally follows a tight helix--a spiral that, 90 percent of the time, is in a clockwise (right-handed) direction.

Because only four to five percent of the cells in a given sample traveled in a helical path at any given time, researchers would not have been able to observe the rare behavior without the new high-throughput microscopy technique.

"This latest study is an extension of truly novel and creative work," says Leon Esterowitz, the NSF biophotonics program officer who has supported Ozcan's efforts. "The holographic technique could accelerate drug discovery and prove valuable for monitoring pharmaceutical treatments of dangerous microbial diseases."

The PNAS paper reports observations of 24,000 cells over the duration of the experiments. Such a large number of observations provide a statistically significant dataset and a useful methodology for potentially studying a range of subjects, from the impact of pharmaceuticals and other substances on large numbers of cells--in real time--to fertility treatments and drug development.

The same approach may also enable scientists to study quick-moving, single-celled microorganisms. Many of the dangerous protozoa found in unsanitary drinking water and rural bodies of water have only been observed in small samples moving through an area that is roughly two dimensional. The new lens-free holographic imaging technique could potentially reveal unknown elements of protozoan behavior and allow real-time testing of novel drug treatments to combat some of the most deadly forms of those microbes.

Amazon to close fashion website endless.com

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc is closing its fashion website endless.com as the world's largest Internet retailer focuses on a new, upgraded apparel and accessories section of its main website.

On September 27, endless.com will become part of Amazon.com/Fashion, according to a statement on the front page of endless.com on Tuesday.

Endless.com was launched in 2007, specializing mainly in women's shoes and handbags.

Starting next week, endless.com said customers will be able to buy shoes, handbags, jewelry and watches from more brands from Amazon's main website, along with apparel.

The switch is part of a big push by Amazon this year to expand further into fashion and apparel, one of the fastest-growing retail categories online. EBay Inc, Amazon's main rival, has done well with its fashion offerings in recent years.

"We are shifting our Endless business to Amazon in order to focus on the Amazon Fashion experience," an Amazon spokesman said on Tuesday.

Zappos and Shopbop, two other fashion websites owned by Amazon, are staying.

"Between Amazon, Shopbop and Zappos, our customers have easy access to an assortment of quality brands and a variety of shopping experiences for any fashion need," the spokesman added.

Amazon also has a successful flash sales website called MYHABIT with a significant focus on fashion items.
