PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Now here?s something you don?t see every day: a faith-based action flick.

Interesting hybrid, but would that it were more compelling and engaging.

For Greater Glory, based on a little-known chapter of Mexican history, is a historical military drama about the preservation of religious freedom.

231 Movie Review: For Greater Glory

(2 stars out of 4)

It focuses on the clash between church and state in the late 1920s, at a time when Mexico?s anti-clerical laws of a decade before ? contained in the nation?s 1917 constitution ? were being rigorously enforced and religious rights were being systematically stripped away.

The virtual purging of the Catholic Church was now mandated in Mexico.

Which precipitated the ?Cristero War,? lasting from 1926 to 1929, a people?s rebellion (Cristeros translates as ?soldiers for Christ?) involving devout Mexican Catholics as revolutionaries who arose in opposition to the Mexican government?s persecution of Catholics, pitting an army of devout Catholic rebels, the Cristeros, against powerful government forces, the Federales.

At a time of strong anti-Catholic sentiments, with state law demanding that churches be closed, previously relatively benign encroachments upon religious freedom suddenly developed into much more sinister actions, as bishops and priests were targeted, rounded up, and deported or even killed.

Andy Garcia stars as General Gorostieta, an agnostic who believes in religious freedom.? Retired but restless, the career soldier overcomes his initial reluctance to get involved and, once he and his observant Catholic wife (played by Eva Longoria) experience Mexico?s fall into violent civil war, comes out of retirement to lead the resistance by helping to train the ragtag band of fighters into a viable military force in its opposition to the military machine fighting for repressive Mexican president Plutarco Calles, played by Ruben Blades.

The supporting cast includes Bruce Greenwood as the US ambassador to Mexico, Peter O?Toole as a venerable parish priest, and Bruce McGill as US president Calvin Coolidge.

Debuting director Dean Wright, an accomplished visual effects supervisor, lacks the skill at this point to corral all the elements and hone the production values so that the film?s second hour does more than just play itself out.

The exposition-heavy, grindingly repetitive screenplay by Michael James Love, offering too much speechifying and breadth instead of depth as it explores its themes of faith and liberty, crams plenty of historical data and far too many incidental characters to keep track of into its bloated running time, but fails to generate much emotional power.

While it may not be intended as heavy-handed propaganda, much of it plays that way.

Whether For Greater Glory will resonate with modern audiences who feel that their religious freedom is threatened remains to be seen.

So we?ll rebel against 2 stars out of 4 for the sprawling, R-rated, faith-based war epic, For Greater Glory.? It may be focused on the greater good, but it still falls far short of glory.

Youngsters can sniff out old people?s scent

And it isn?t all that bad

Web edition : 5:13 pm

?Old people smell? is for real ? and it isn?t mothballs, Jean Nat? or pipe tobacco. It?s a mild and not unpleasant odor compared with the intense, unpleasant smell emitted by 40- to 50-something guys, a new study finds.

Scientists don?t know what makes up this vintage chemical fingerprint, but the research suggests that apologies to your grandparents may be in order. The negative association with the smell of the elderly appears to be more about context than scent, says Johan Lundstr?m of the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia.

Lundstr?m and his colleagues collected underarm odors from 12 to 16 people in each of three age groups: young (20 to 30 years old), middle-aged (45 to 55 years old) and old (75 to 95 years old). For five nights while they slept, the study participants wore T-shirts with breast-feeding pads sewn in the underarms. The shirts and bed linens had been washed with scent-free soap and the participants did the same to themselves before going to bed each night. They also refrained from smoking, drinking alcohol or eating foods that are known to contribute odors to bodily secretions.

Evaluators (aged 20 to 30) then sniffed the armpit pads. Evaluators rated the samples on pleasantness and intensity, guessed which of two odors came from the older donor and then labeled all of the scents by age category. The evaluators had trouble discerning young from middle-aged odors. But the odors from old donors were correctly identified more often than would be expected by chance, the research team reports online May 30 in PLoS ONE.

?These elderly odors were very distinct and easy to group together,? says Lundstr?m. Not only that, but odors from old men were rated most pleasant, especially compared to middle-aged men. (Middle-aged woman odors were rated more pleasant than elderly woman odors.)

And descriptions of the elderly odors weren?t negative: Evaluators used phrases such as ?earthy? or ?mild, like stale water,? Lundstr?m says.

?Everything changes with age, so it?s not a huge surprise,? says Dustin Penn, who heads the Konrad Lorenz Institute of Ethology in Vienna and has investigated how scents are involved in mating among people and other animals.

The possible mechanisms behind the bodily bouquets are most intriguing, he says. Perhaps the drop in testosterone that occurs in old age makes the older scents discernible. Work by Penn and others suggests that an individual?s microflora ? the personal mix of bodily bacteria that can?t be scrubbed away ? also contributes to Eau de You.?

The study is also interesting because it reveals that our noses know more than we know. ?In many ways we are pathetic compared to dogs and other animals. But that doesn?t mean we aren?t getting any information,? Penn says. ?We don?t seem to be aware of what we can do.?

Tomato genome project bears fruit

LONDON | Wed May 30, 2012 2:56pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - An international team of scientists has cracked the genetic code of the domesticated tomato and its wild ancestor, an achievement which should help breeders identify the genes needed to develop tastier and more nutritious varieties.

The full genome sequence of a tomato breed known as Heinz 1706, and a draft sequence for its closest wild relative Solanum pimpinellifolium, were published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.

Researchers who carried out the work said that together the sequences provide the most detailed look yet at the functional parts of the tomato genome and show order, orientation, types and relative positions of all of its 35,000 genes.

The sequences should help researchers find the links between certain tomato genes and the characteristics they determine, and will also extend scientists' understanding of how genetic and environmental factors affect the health of a crop.

"Tomatoes are one of the most important fruit crops in the world, both in terms of the volume that we eat and the vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals that both fresh and processed tomato products provide to our diets," said Graham Seymour, a professor of biotechnology at Nottingham University, one of 300 scientists involved in the Tomato Genome Consortium (TGC).

TOMATOES ARE NOT THE ONLY FRUIT

The tomato is also a good model to investigate the process of fruit ripening, so understanding its genome should help reveal the molecular circuits that make fruits ripen and give them their health-promoting properties, the team said.

"For any characteristic of the tomato, whether it's taste, natural pest resistance or nutritional content, we've captured virtually all those genes," said James Giovannoni from the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University, who was part of the U.S. tomato sequencing team.

Tomatoes represent a $2 billion market in the United States alone, while in Britain the market for tomatoes is worth around 625 million pounds ($980 million) a year.

The research also offers some insight into how the tomato and its relatives diversified and adapted to new environments over the years.

The scientists said the findings show the tomato genome expanded abruptly about 60 million years ago. Some of the genes generated during that expansion were involved in the development and control of ripening, making them particularly interesting to tomato breeders.

The TGC involved scientists in 14 countries including Argentina, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, Britain, the United States and others.

Giovanni said the work has implications for other plant species.

Strawberries, apples, melons, bananas and other fleshy fruits share some characteristics with tomatoes, he explained, so knowledge about the genes involved in fruit ripening could potentially be applied to them, helping breeders and growers to improve food quality and cut costs.

"Now we can start asking a lot more interesting questions about fruit biology, disease resistance, root development and nutritional qualities," he said in a statement.

Greek Drama

In the case of the eurozone, the carpet and furniture are Portugal, Ireland, and Spain. Once it becomes clear that an exit from the euro is a real possibility, the odds are that people who hold bank accounts in those countries will want to take their money out. Nobody wants their 10,000-euro nest egg to be suddenly turned into 10,000 much-less-valuable new escudos. If you keep the cash in your desk drawer, you?ll be spared the possibility of conversion. Even better, if you manage to move the money into a German bank account, you may even make money as the euro appreciates with the weaker states gone. But bank runs in these countries will force national governments to undertake new bank bailouts, which will worsen their overall sovereign debt. That, in turn, would require even more bailouts from northern Europe. Spain, which thus far hasn?t been bailed out, would be particularly expensive.

Apple trees in Highlands mapped

The planting of apple trees could be on the increase in the Highlands, according to the maker of a new map recording where they grow in the area.

Highland Council's Apple Map features 86 sites, including 15 with trees more than 80 years old and 39 with trees younger than 20 years old.

Jonathan Willet, the local authority's biodiversity officer, said a number of new orchards were being established.

They included one near Strathpeffer with 256 trees.

Some of the highest numbers of trees and varieties were recorded in and around Inverness, also on Skye and in Lochaber.

Mr Willet spent eight months gathering details of where the fruit was grown.

He said apples at the orchard near Strathpeffer included seven varieties used to make cider.

The biodiversity officer said: "With the south of England getting less rainfall, new orchards will be planted further north as apple trees need plenty of moisture to grow and set fruit.

"Our survey discovered there are only a handful of commercial orchards in Highland."

Best names

He added: "There were 74 varieties that were named, with one site near Inverness having a remarkable 58 varieties, almost double the number of the next most diverse site.

"Some of the best names of the varieties were Pitmaston Pine Apple, Irish Peach, Enmeth Early and Ballerina Polka."

Mr Willet also hoped to find where Coul Blush, a variety first grown by Sir George Mackenzie at Coul House in Contin, Ross-shire, in 1827, was still grown.

The sweet dessert apple has a yellow skin with a faint blush of red.

Some young trees were found and one old tree near Coul House.

Fed: Several members could support further easing

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal Reserve policymakers are open to further efforts to stimulate the U.S. economy if growth falters or threats escalate.

Minutes of the central bank's April 24-25 meeting released Wednesday stated that "several members" thought additional Fed support could be needed if the recovery lost momentum or if the risks to the economy became great enough.

The minutes did not spell out what circumstances would trigger further Fed efforts to lower interest rates to boost the economy. But they did note some threats to the U.S. economy. One is Europe's debt crisis. Another is the risk that spending cuts and tax increases that could take effect at year's end if Congress can't reach a budget agreement could slow growth more than expected.

The comments stood in contrast to the previous minutes, which said that only "a couple" of members expressed support for further bond purchases. Since the financial crisis, the Fed has pursued two rounds of bond purchases to try to push down long-term interest rates, with a goal of encouraging borrowing and spending.

Private economists said the change in wording to "several" from "a couple" raised the possibility of further Fed action. But analysts said they still think no further moves will occur unless Europe's crisis worsens or a budget impasse in Congress threatens the U.S. economy.

"Nothing in the minutes changes our view on policy," said Sal Guatieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.

The stock market barely reacted to the Fed minutes, which essentially confirmed investors' expectations for the Fed's future moves.

On Wednesday, the Fed also announced that for the rest of this year and next year all of its meetings will last for two days to allow more time for discussion. Until now, some policy meetings had lasted only one day.

The Fed also altered the schedule for releasing a quarterly update of its economic forecasts. That release will occur when the Fed meets in the third month of each quarter: March, June, September and December. After those meetings, Bernanke will discuss the Fed's new outlook with reporters.

Before the change, those forecasts and Bernanke's news conferences occurred in January, April, June and October. Bernanke started holding regular news conferences a year ago.

The minutes released Wednesday cover the discussion that took place at the April meeting. In a statement after that meeting, Fed officials repeated their plan to keep a key short-term interest rate at a record low until at least late 2014. The action was approved on a 9-1 vote.

Jeffrey Lacker, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, opposed retaining the late-2014 target date. The minutes said Lacker believed the Fed will have to start increasing interest rates by mid-2013 in order to keep inflation under control.

At a news conference after April's meeting, Chairman Ben Bernanke left open the possibility of further Fed action to stimulate the economy. Private economists generally say another round of Fed bond buying isn't likely unless the economic outlook darkens considerably.

Bernanke said at his news conference that more bond purchases, or other steps by the Fed, were still an option if the economy weakens. He declared that "those tools remain very much on the table."

Critics have expressed concerns that the central bank was raising the risk of higher inflation with its long-running campaign to keep rates low.

The Fed has kept its federal funds rate, the target for overnight bank lending, near zero since December 2008. That means consumer and business loans tied to that rate have also remained at super-low levels. The lower those loan rates, the more likely it is that consumers and companies will borrow and spend to invigorate the economy.

'X Factor' may be singing "Oops!..." over Britney

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Simon Cowell and Fox television are gambling on pop icon Britney Spears and teen singer Demi Lovato to revive "The X Factor", but for many media watchers it could be a case of "Oops!..." did they do it again?

Spears, 30, and former Disney Channel star Lovato, 19, are expected to bring in bigger, and more importantly younger, audiences when the singing contest returns for its second season on U.S. television in September after a weaker-than-expected debut in 2011.

But whether viewers will tune in is less certain, and the huge check Fox and the producers wrote - Spears is reported to be getting $15 million for one season - may not pay off, pop culture and TV experts say.

"It's a short term gain for 'X Factor'. There will be a huge amount of PR and when the show premieres there will be huge ratings," said Lyndsey Parker, managing editor of Yahoo! Music. "But I think it could be a disaster. I think Britney could make Nicole Scherzinger look like a genius," Parker said.

Spears, who became a teen sensation with hit records such as "Oops! ... I Did It Again," suffered a career and personal meltdown in 2007 but later rebounded. Now, at age 30, the "Womanizer" mom of two is mostly shielded from the media and rarely gives live interviews.

Andy Dehnart, editor of RealityBlurred.com, said many viewers will likely tune in just to "see her crash and burn."

"It's not clear she is really a TV personality and somebody who can give the show what it needs, which is really insightful, concise, witty critiques of these singers," Dehnart said.

"I really don't think it's going to work, but I am hopeful that Britney will surprise us," he added.

FACTORING IN THE CHANGES

"X-Factor" came into its first season last year with high expectations but failed to reach them. With former "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul and ex-Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger on the panel of mentors/judges, Cowell had boasted his new show would oust "Idol" as the most-watched show on U.S. television.

His claim rang hollow when "X Factor" drew only about half the "Idol" audience over its first season, and critics slammed it for being noisy, stale and over-produced.

Spears and Lovato were hired to fill the slots left by Abdul and Scherzinger, who were fired in January with Steve Jones, a British presenter who was seen as wooden and flustered.

Cowell said the new panel "will be dynamic and will work really well with the changes we are making to the show," but he did not spell out what those changes will be.

Hitfix.com music blogger Melinda Newman questioned whether Spears will sizzle on live television the way she does on her highly-produced records and in her well-choreographed concerts.

Spears may flail on a TV show in which the best moments happen when judges speak off the cuff and often deliver harsh news to aspiring singers who don't make the grade, experts said.

"You are saying to someone, 'you may succeed but your dream of succeeding through us ends here.' That is emotional pressure and that is hard to do," said Newman.

"The public has not seen Britney in an environment where we would know if she is able to withstand that level of pressure and have to think very quickly on her feet," she added.

Lovato, 19, the former star of Disney Channel's "Sonny With a Chance", is seen as a draw for Latino viewers because of her Mexican, Irish and Italian descent. She also will be the youngest judge on a U.S. TV talent show, and that is key because broadcast TV networks try to lure younger audiences whom advertisers covet for their spending power.

But TVLine.com writer Michael Slezak said Lovato's resume was "as light as beaten egg whites" and questioned whether the teen was ready for the spotlight of a high-profile of a TV show after her 2010 stint in rehab for eating disorders and cutting.

Also raising eyebrows has been Spears' reported $15 million salary - more than five times what Abdul was earning - especially since Cowell has yet to find a capable host to replace Jones.

"If that $15 million is an accurate figure, it makes no sense," said Dehnart. "To give that to someone who is unproven on a show is really a disaster (and) seems absurd to me."

Despite some misgivings, Newman felt Spears would be good for the show because Cowell needed a top celebrity who is going to bring viewers. "He needs someone on the level of Christina Aguilera or Jennifer Lopez," she said, referring to the judges on rivals "The Voice" and "American Idol," respectively.

Still, Newman said "X Factor" needed more than celebrities to keep audiences coming back two nights a week for four months.

"The inherent problem with any of these shows it that you are only as good as your contestants. That is catching lightning in a bottle and getting a Susan Boyle," said Newman.

"If you watch the show, you are watching because you are invested in these acts."

Buffett snags 10 million shares of GM stock

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

Analysts and investors alike will be watching the ticker closely this week to see how the market responds to word that the ?Oracle of Omaha? has grabbed 10 million shares of General Motors (GM) stock.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Warren Buffett?s investment firm Berkshire Hathaway will spend $256.6 million for the stock, a nearly 20 percent?premium over their value of $214.2 million when trading on the New York Stock Exchange wrapped up on Tuesday.

Shares of GM soared early on Wednesday before settling. GM closed the trading day up 0.50 points, or 2.33 percent.

Fisker Delaying Atlantic Plug-in Launch By Full Year

But that?s still well behind the $330 million Buffett would have invested during GM?s November 2010 IPO. And the question is whether this move signals the possible turnaround in GM shares which have been lagging like most automotive stocks in recent months.

The maker has staged a modest recovery from its $19-a-share 52-week-low, and GM stock surged by $1 as soon as the market opened Wednesday morning before settling back slightly.

?I think he is spot-on,? wrote David Kudla, CEO of Mainstay Capital Management, which manages the portfolios for many General Motors retirees.? Kudla emphasized that unlike some other high-profile investors Buffett focuses on the longer-term by buying into companies he sees as selling below their value.

New Nissan Altima is an ?All-American? Car

GM?s current slump comes in sharp contrast to the optimism its IPO was greeted with, many analysts subsequently forecasting its shares could surge as high as $50 or more.? But the maker ? like most of its competitors ? has been hit a variety of headwinds, including an uncertain U.S. economy and the European debt crisis.

That, in turn, has resulted in a slump of the Continental car market ? worsening GM?s own slide in the European market.? The maker had hoped to claw back into the black in 2011 but instead reported a sharp loss which triggered a recent management shake-up.? It is expected to announce the latest in a series of turnaround plans in the coming months.

On the positive side, GM posted an all-time record profit of $7.6 billion. And while European losses hurt its first-quarter performance ? a $1 billion net profit ? earnings from the still-critical North American market shot to $1.7 billion before taxes.

Harold ?Red? Poling Dead at 86

Specifically why Berkshire Hathaway has decided to buy GM stock now is something the investment firm won?t disclose, though some analysts have become increasingly bullish about the industry overall ? and the domestics in particular ? as U.S. car sales continue to outperform the overall economy.

It?s by no means Buffett?s first automotive investment.? He currently holds a roughly 10% stake in BYD, a Chinese automaker focused on battery-based powertrains.? Short for Build Your Dreams, the firm is also one of the world?s largest providers of cellphone and laptop computer batteries.

Buffett himself drives a Cadillac DTS, one of relatively few luxuries for a man who still lives in the same Omaha home he has owned for over half a century.

FDA Panel Backs At-Home HIV Test

TUESDAY, May 15 (HealthDay News) -- A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended Tuesday approval of the first HIV test that would give people the results in the privacy of their own home.

The 17 panel members were unanimous in voting that the benefits of the test were greater than any possible risks. The test kit, known as Oraquick, detects the presence of HIV -- the virus that causes AIDS -- within 20 minutes, the Associated Press reported.

If the FDA heeds the recommendation of its advisory panel, the decision could pave the way toward a new era in HIV testing. The agency typically follows the recommendations of its advisory groups.

OraSure Technologies Inc., which makes the over-the-counter test, already sells a version of it to doctors and other health professionals. Studies have shown the test was less accurate when used by consumers, but the panelists said Tuesday that the benefits of expanding HIV testing outweigh a small drop in test accuracy, according to the AP.

"There is huge global momentum in support of over-the-counter testing for HIV. People desire private, discreet options that protect their confidentiality," said Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, an assistant professor of medicine at Montreal's McGill University who co-authored an analysis of the effectiveness of an at-home HIV test earlier this year.

The test, which looks for signs of HIV in oral fluid, is already used at hospitals and doctors' offices where medical professionals administer it. The FDA first approved its use in 2004.

To take the OraQuick test, people swab their outer gums and put the swab into a vial. After about 20 minutes, the test device will reveal two reddish-purple lines in a small window if there are signs that the body's immune system has geared up to battle HIV.

The test uses oral fluid, which is not the same as saliva. Its results are considered preliminary, and should be confirmed by a blood test.

OraSure had nearly 5,700 people take the at-home version of the test. The tests found that 114 thought they were HIV-positive; 106 of them actually were. That means that positive results were accurate 93 percent of the time. Negative results were accurate 99.98 percent of the time, the company said.

Pant Pai said the oral test's overall accuracy is similar to that of a blood test, although it's slightly less accurate. The oral test, in particular, may miss HIV infection in its early stages, she said.

Also, "the sensitivity of the test appears lower when administered in the home setting rather than a medical setting, so some of the people who are HIV-positive will get a test result that they are negative," said Jane Rotheram-Borus, director of the Center for HIV Identification Prevention & Treatment Services at the University of California, Los Angeles. "However, if they would otherwise not have gotten the test at all, they may also have believed they were negative."

Experts have expressed concern for people who learn at home, possibly alone, that they are probably infected with the virus that causes AIDS.

"The arguments against the at-home test focus on the absence of a counselor who could provide support and link the newly identified HIV-positive individual to medical care," said Rotheram-Borus, who supports over-the-counter sales of the OraQuick test.

She pointed out that "over-the-counter pregnancy tests are widely used, and pregnant women do find their way into prenatal care."

Orasure has said it will offer a 24-hour toll-free number that people can call to get support regarding their test results.

The comnpany has not determined the over-the-counter price of the test yet.

Canada: Watch for Flea Beetles This Spring

News

CANADA - Once canola starts to emerge, start scouting for flea beetles. Flea beetles are now very active and present in emerged canola. Canola will emerge quickly with forecast temperatures in high teens for the next week.

Ontario Canola Growers reports that flea beetle damage is most severe the first two weeks after canola seedling emergence. At the 3-4 leaf stage the plants can generally outgrow the feeding damage.

Early Planted Canola may need early control

Very early planted canola stands may be thin and have been stressed by cold temperatures/frost and slow emergence. Stressed canola stands will be less tolerant of added stress from flea beetle damage. In addition seed treatments may no longer be providing protection.

Seed treatments provide 14-21 days protection against low to moderate flea beetle pressure. Flea beetles must take a bite from the plant to die, so expect to see some feeding damage. However under heavy or sustained pressure, seed treatment may not provide adequate control.

Flea beetle damage at threshold levels can occur before weed control timing depending on how quickly the crop develops.

Damage appears as shot holes or pitting in leaves and stem feeding leading to reduced and weaker stands.

Scout field margins and early emerging weeds like stinkweed, wild mustard, pennycress and lambsquarter, where flea beetles usually appear first. When scouting, it is important to understand that flea beetles generally invade canola fields from the field edges. Under cool temperatures flea beetles stay close to soil surface, but become active and fly in search of food on warm sunny days.

Under cool, cloudy weather look for damage on underside of leaves and stem below the cotyledon where flea beetles will be more active. Scout every 2-3 days in warm and sunny weather, because threshold levels can be quickly reached.

Control

Control is warranted when 25 per cent of the surface leaf area is damaged. Foliar products have a short residual and may only give 3-4 days of protection. Multiple applications may be necessary for high infestations. If damage exceeding threshold numbers are reached in only field margins, a foliar spray may only be required for that area. However under warm, calm weather, flea beetles take flight and may.

U.S. to escalate war on Alzheimer's | Health X Pert Articles-Health ...

The U.S. government is stepping up efforts to combat Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, affecting more than 5 million Americans and whose progression has been resistant to treatments. U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius detailed the plan Tuesday at the Alzheimer?s Disease Research Summit 2012: Path to Treatment and Prevention. Alzheimer's is projected to affect 16 million by 2050.??"The plan gives us a blueprint to build on our research efforts," Sebelius said at the announcement. ?"These actions are the cornerstone of an ambitious and ?aggressive agenda." The plan promises to find effective prevention and?treatment approaches ?for Alzheimer's disease by 2025.? Leading Alzheimer's researchers from around the world are at the National Institutes of Health today to talk about which research should be emphasized. To help, the government has launched with website www.alzheimers.gov as a resource for people to find out more about the disease, caregiving and getting help. President Obama signed the National Alzheimer?s Project Act into law in January 2011, which called for a coordinated national plan to fight Alzheimer's. In February of 2012 , the administration said it would push for a $156 million increase in funding for Alzheimer's research over the next two years. As of Tuesday, Obama's proposed 2013 budget allows for a $100 million increase for anti-Alzheimer's efforts. Funding for Alzheimer's research in the United States has not even approached the level of monetary support for other major diseases. Last year, the NIH spent $3 billion on research into AIDS, $4.3 billion on heart disease, and $5.8 billion for cancer, according to the Alzheimer's Association . Photo gallery: Alzheimer's disease The current thinking among Alzheimer's experts is that early detection and intervention ? even before symptoms begin ? is better. Individuals with only mild memory problems may hold the most promise for testing treatments. Some of the funding will go towards launching two major clinical trials, according to HHS.? "One is a $7.9 million effort to test an insulin nasal spray for treating Alzheimer?s disease. ?A second study, toward which National Institutes of Health is contributing $16 million, is the first prevention trial in people at the highest risk for the disease," said?Sebelius in a press statement. Funding is only one part of finding solutions for this debilitating disease.? In practice scientists find it challenging to get a lot of participation in clinical trials . Some people don't want to risk the possible side effects of an experimental drug; others do want to try new drugs, but fear being placed in the placebo group.? And elderly people may have practical difficulties getting to the study location. Filed under: Alzheimer?s , Conditions Tagged: Elizabeth Landau ? CNN.com Health Writer/Producer

New 'metamaterial' practical for optical advances

ScienceDaily (May 15, 2012) ? Researchers have taken a step toward overcoming a key obstacle in commercializing "hyperbolic metamaterials," structures that could bring optical advances including ultrapowerful microscopes, computers and solar cells.

The researchers have shown how to create the metamaterials without the traditional silver or gold previously required, said Alexandra Boltasseva, a Purdue University assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Using the metals is impractical for industry because of high cost and incompatibility with semiconductor manufacturing processes. The metals also do not transmit light efficiently, causing much of it to be lost. The Purdue researchers replaced the metals with an "aluminum-doped zinc oxide," or AZO.

"This means we can have a completely new material platform for creating optical metamaterials, which offers important advantages," Boltasseva said.

Doctoral student Gururaj V. Naik provided major contributions to the research, working with a team to develop a new metamaterial consisting of 16 layers alternating between AZO and zinc oxide. Light passing from the zinc oxide to the AZO layers encounters an "extreme anisotropy," causing its dispersion to become "hyperbolic," which dramatically changes the light's behavior.

"The doped oxide brings not only enhanced performance but also is compatible with semiconductors," Boltasseva said.

Research findings are detailed in a paper appearing on May 14 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The list of possible applications for metamaterials includes a "planar hyperlens" that could make optical microscopes 10 times more powerful and able to see objects as small as DNA; advanced sensors; more efficient solar collectors; quantum computing; and cloaking devices.

The AZO also makes it possible to "tune" the optical properties of metamaterials, an advance that could hasten their commercialization, Boltasseva said.

"It's possible to adjust the optical properties in two ways," she said. "You can vary the concentration of aluminum in the AZO during its formulation. You can also alter the optical properties in AZO by applying an electrical field to the fabricated metamaterial."

This switching ability might usher in a new class of metamaterials that could be turned hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic at the flip of a switch.

"This could actually lead to a whole new family of devices that can be tuned or switched," Boltasseva said. "AZO can go from dielectric to metallic. So at one specific wavelength, at one applied voltage, it can be metal and at another voltage it can be dielectric. This would lead to tremendous changes in functionality."

The researchers "doped" zinc oxide with aluminum, meaning the zinc oxide is impregnated with aluminum atoms to alter the material's optical properties. Doping the zinc oxide causes it to behave like a metal at certain wavelengths and like a dielectric at other wavelengths.

The material has been shown to work in the near-infrared range of the spectrum, which is essential for optical communications, and could allow researchers to harness "optical black holes" to create a new generation of light-harvesting devices for solar energy applications.

The PNAS paper was authored by Naik, Boltasseva, doctoral student Jingjing Liu, senior research scientist Alexander V. Kildishev, and Vladimir M. Shalaev, scientific director of nanophotonics at Purdue's Birck Nanotechnology Center, a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering and a scientific adviser for the Russian Quantum Center.

Current optical technologies are limited because, for the efficient control of light, components cannot be smaller than the size of the wavelengths of light. Metamaterials are able to guide and control light on all scales, including the scale of nanometers, or billionths of a meter.

Unlike natural materials, metamaterials are able to reduce the "index of refraction" to less than one or less than zero. Refraction occurs as electromagnetic waves, including light, bend when passing from one material into another. It causes the bent-stick-in-water effect, which occurs when a stick placed in a glass of water appears bent when viewed from the outside. Each material has its own refraction index, which describes how much light will bend in that particular material and defines how much the speed of light slows down while passing through a material

Natural materials typically have refractive indices greater than one. Metamaterials, however, can make the index of refraction vary from zero to one, which possibly will enable applications including the hyperlens.

The layered metamaterial is a so-called plasmonic structure because it conducts clouds of electrons called "plasmons."

"Alternative plasmonic materials such as AZO overcome the bottleneck created by conventional metals in the design of optical metamaterials and enable more efficient devices," Boltasseva said. "We anticipate that the development of these new plasmonic materials and nanostructured material composites will lead to tremendous progress in the technology of optical metamaterials, enabling the full-scale development of this technology and uncovering many new physical phenomena."

'Dark Knight Rises': How Much Will 'Knightfall' Factor In?

The Weekly Rising takes a closer look at the comic inspiration for Christopher Nolan's final Batman film.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

<i>Batman</i> #497: The breaking of the Bat
Photo: DC Comics

Throughout his tenure as the commander of the big-screen Batman, Christopher Nolan, along with writing partners Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer, have pulled selectively from the vast library of books for inspiration in the films. "Batman Begins" borrowed a handful of elements from Frank Miller's "Batman: Year One," while "The Dark Knight" took some character notes from "The Long Halloween."

When it was announced that Bane would make his triumphant return as a respectable villain in the finale, "The Dark Knight Rises," comic books fans were just as quick to shout "Knightfall," in reference to the trilogy of stories that played out during 1993 and 1994. It appeared Nolan and company had found their inspiration, but what exactly would they use from those books?

Bane
The masked villain was the clear giveaway to "Knightfall" 's presence as an influence, and it's clear why. Bane only showed up on the DC Comics scene four months before the beginning of the "Knightfall" story line, and once the show got on the road, he made his introduction count. As he appears to be in "The Dark Knight Rises," the Bane of the comics was a hyper-intelligent behemoth of a man, capable of besting Bruce Wayne.

Prison Break
Part of Bane's plan in gaining the upper hand over Batman involved releasing all of Arkham Asylum's worst inmates on the city. Batman wears himself down, rounding up the likes of the Joker, the Scarecrow and Poison Ivy, and this series of bouts leaves him severely weakened when he finally has to face off against Bane in the Batcave, leading to the most significant scene from "Knightfall."

The Break
If Bane is remembered for anything, it is the central moment of "Knightfall" when he takes a physically and mentally exhausted Bruce Wayne and breaks his back with a knee to the spine. It was a critical blow in more than one sense of the word and significantly changed the shape of the Batman titles for years to come. The scant footage we have actually seen from "The Dark Knight Rises" hints that Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne does suffer some similar injury during the course of the film. He appears to be walking with a cane, and while we can't conclusively blame Bane, the timing sure is something!

Catwoman
Selina Kyle's appearance in both "Knightfall" and "The Dark Knight Rises" most likely is a coincidence, since her role in the former is not terribly significant. It does matter, however, that she attempts to help Bruce Wayne with his paralysis, demonstrating that there are many facets to her allegiances.

The New Batman
While Bruce Wayne was on the mend thanks to Bane's handiwork, a new Batman, Jean-Paul Valley, took up the cowl in his absence. Since the tag line of "The Dark Knight Rises" leaves little doubt that the "legend ends" with this final movie, fans have been pondering whether the new film will mean the death of Bruce Wayne. If that's the case, the symbol would have to live on. A new Dark Knight would have to rise.

Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."
